Wednesday 20th March marks International Happiness Day and it's the perfect opportunity to reflect on what it truly means to be happy and how we can actively improve happiness in our lives.
This International Day of Happiness, established by the United Nations, reminds us of the importance of prioritising happiness and wellbeing as fundamental goals for all human beings. Originating from the belief that progress should be measured not only by economic growth but also by the happiness and wellbeing of citizens, it encourages us to explore how we can improve our own happiness and that of others.
Connecting with People
Think about when you last spent time with a friend or had a heart-to-heart conversation with a loved one. How did it make you feel? Human connection is like soul food; it nourishes us and fills our hearts with warmth and contentment. So, why not take this opportunity to reach out to someone you care about? Whether it's a text, a call, or a chat over coffee, fostering meaningful connections can truly brighten our days. You could even volunteer your time at a local community centre or join a club or group based on your interests. The simple act of connecting with others can significantly boost your mood and sense of belonging.
Spending Time Outdoors and Exercising
Picture yourself basking in the sun, surrounded by the sounds of nature. Sounds blissful, doesn't it? Nature has a profound effect on our wellbeing, offering us tranquillity, inspiration, and a sense of awe. Incorporating outdoor activities into your daily routine can have remarkable benefits for your mental and physical health. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll in the park or an adrenaline-pumping hike in the wilderness, immersing yourself in nature can work wonders for your mood and wellbeing.
Regular exercise is essential for maintaining optimal health and happiness. Physical activity releases endorphins, also known as the "feel-good" hormones, which can alleviate stress and anxiety. Exercise doesn't have to be a chore; it can be a celebration of what our bodies are capable of. So, what's your favourite way to get your body moving? Whether it's dancing to your favourite songs, practising yoga or heading out for a run, find what you love and make it a part of your routine.
The Art of Giving
Whether it's volunteering your time, donating to charity, or simply performing random acts of kindness, giving back to others not only benefits the recipients but also increases your own happiness. When it feels good for both involved, why don’t we do it more? Consider volunteering at a local charity, helping at an animal shelter, or participating in community clean-up efforts. Alternatively, you could donate to a cause that's close to your heart or surprise a friend or family member with a thoughtful gesture. It doesn't necessarily need to involve a tangible gift – you can opt for a compliment, performing an act of kindness, or dedicating more time and attention to that individual. The simple act of giving, no matter how small, has the power to make a significant difference in someone's life.
Becoming More Mindful
Practising mindfulness allows us to become more present and aware. Take time each day to engage in mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindful walking. Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. Additionally, encourage an attitude of gratitude by regularly reflecting on the things in your life that you're thankful for, it could be your health or your relationships.
